Graduate Training Schemes - Choosing a Scheme

Presumably if you are considering applying for a graduate scheme you would have done at least some basic research about the company, not only what it does, but the type of organisation it is. The easiest place to learn about a business is its corporate website but also make use of recruitment fairs to meet people who actually work there. Don't be afraid of contacting the HR department with any extra questions you may have before you apply and before accepting a place if offered one.

Things to keep in mind are the location, hours and working environment. The type of workmates you have can make all the difference. Are there many other of a similar age to you? Is the office sociable? And importantly, keep an eye on the hours you will be expected to work, some companies may require you to work alternate Saturdays for instance.

Bright-eyed graduates entering the workforce for the first time may feel pressured to put aside their own personal beliefs and integrity in order to score points with their employer. However, ethically-driven decisions are becoming more acceptable as companies seek ways to attract the best talent. Applicants who demonstrate a social conscience in their applications should also demonstrate it in their actions in the workplace. Far from being a negative, many employers will view such demonstrations as a positive quality.

Ethical considerations you may wish to bear in mind when choosing which scheme to apply for may include environmental and social impacts, marketplace and workplace practices, ethical governance and an alignment of your beliefs with those of the organisation.
